JAN 28 ,1853 – MAY 10,1895. Born José Julián Martí Pérez. Martí is known as the “Apostle” of the Cuban Revolution and was a national hero and important figure in Latin American literature. He was an essayist, a poet, a journalist, a political theorist, a professor and a revolutionary philosopher. As a youth, he dedicated much of his life to the promotion of liberty and independence, for Cuba and the rest of the Spanish-controlled Americas. Martí’s literature also consisted of the threat of US expansionism in Cuba. In 1985, he was killed in military action. His death and legacy was used as a cry for Cuban Independence. Martí is revered in Latin America and the world as one of the greatest Latin American intellectual revolutionists.
